Lot 59: MUSIC – Richard Wagner (Leipzig, 1813 – Venice, 1883) – Autograph letter signed

Richard Wagner (Leipzig, 1813 – Venice, 1883)

Autograph letter signed, dated Bayreuth 27 September 1873, addressed to “Dear Sir” [but certainly to Carl Voltz, his agent in Wiesbaden]. The letter is written from Bayreuth, where Wagner has settled less than a year earlier. He wants to know the amount awaiting him from the rights to perform his works, and when he will receive it. He is aware of Voltz’s financial difficulties and that he cannot ask for an advance but he still requires a clear indication of the sum. The rights claimed by Wagner certainly refer to the lawsuit held in Leipzig, which result was favorable to him and Voltz. However, the Musician worries that they may be lost due to the bad faith of the convicted party and therefor he asks for clarifications and guarantees. The letter follows the vague news given by Voltz. 2 pp. In-8°. In German.
