In collaboration with his wife Irène, he discovered artificial radioactivity by observing the spontaneous disintegration of elements obtained by bombarding other elements with alpha particles. He had Europe's first cyclotron built. He was President of the World Peace Council and the first High Commissioner for Atomic Energy. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935.
