At the end of his secondary education in Paris, he could not decide what he wanted to do. He entered the Sorbonne with the idea of becoming a diplomat. At the age of 18 he decided to study physics and in 1913 obtained a degree in science. In 1924, he was awarded a doctorate for Recherches sur la théorie des quantas. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1929. In 1933, he was elected to the Académie des Sciences and became its permanent secretary in 1942.
