Dr. med. in 1906. In 1917 he was appointed director of the Institute of Physiology in Zurich. Shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1949 with A. Moniz (Portugal) for their discovery of the functional organisation of the hypothalmus as the coordinator of the functions of the internal organs.
