Doctor of Medicine from the Faculty of Montpellier in 1841. He went to Paris, but failed the agrégation in medicine and taught in Montpellier. In 1853, he failed the agrégation in medicine a second time, but passed the agrégation in pharmacy. He left teaching to devote himself to popularising science. He worked as a scientific journalist for several journals. The author of a large number of books, he was criticised by scientists but acclaimed by his readers, acquiring fortune, fame and social recognition, all things that his academic career had denied him.
Autograph letter signed Paris, 28.11.1892 to a colleague, concerning his work "Les Bonheurs d'outre tombe": "... j'espère que, par les idées nouvelles qu'il contient, cet ouvrage vous paraîtra digne d'être signalé à vos lecteurs…". 1 p. In-8.
