A lieutenant at the age of 13, he was promoted to colonel in 1792. Dismissed, he re-enlisted as a private and rose to the rank of division general in 1795. He was one of four senators chosen for the honorary title of Marshal of the Empire. Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor. He rallied to the Bourbons in 1814, but served Napoleon during the Hundred Days.
