After calculating the Moon's parallax with unprecedented accuracy at the age of nineteen, he was admitted to the Berlin Academy of Sciences at the age of twenty. In 1759, he published a corrected edition of Halley's tables and in 1762 was appointed to the astronomy chair at the Collège de France, a post he held for 46 years. He is best known for his description of the French sky and his measurement of the orbit of Mars.
