At the same time as studying literature at the University of Lyon, he studied singing and opera at the Lyon Conservatoire. He then spent seven years in Milan perfecting his Italian repertoire. During his career, he sang in a large number of opera houses and theatres throughout Europe. After giving up his singing career, René Massis was artistic delegate at the Opéra national de Lyon for five years. Since 2006, he has headed the Agence Massis Opéra artistic agency. In 1986, he was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
