Cavalry captain, he fought in Italy from 1934 to 1937. Promoted to general in 1742, he served in the Bavarian, Upper Alsatian and Rhine armies. Promoted marshal in 1745, he took part in several battles in Germany. In 1789, Louis XVI entrusted him with command of the troops assembled near Versailles and the Ministry of War. He was forced to emigrate to Trier. In 1797, he went to Russia, then retired to Riga and finally to Munster, refusing to return to France.
