He studied violin at the conservatoire in Pau. After attending a Handel festival in England, in 1873 he created the orchestra that would bear his name and conducted it in a performance of Handel's Messiah. He was second conductor of the Conservatooire and first conductor of the Paris Opéra.
Autograph letter signed and dated Paris, 27.02.1899: "... les médecins m'affirment que je pourrai me lever dans quelques jours…”.
