He took his first violin lessons from his brother Emile and then from a Polish master in Montreux. At the age of 21, he was appointed professor at the Lausanne Conservatoire. In 1919 he took over Ysaye's class in Cleveland. In 1929 he returned to Lausanne and in 1948 to the USA.
