Born into a Gypsy family, he entered the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest at the age of nine and began touring at sixteen. Taken prisoner of war in 1941, it was not until 1947 that he was able to resume his piano studies. In 1956 his family fled Hungary and took refuge in Paris. He travelled to the USA and London. In 1975, he created the Cziffra Foundation to help young talent. He was deeply affected by the death of his son in 1981.
