Took private music lessons. Composed his first symphony in 1902. Various engagements in Berslau, Zurich, Munich, Strasbourg and Lubeck. In 1920, he succeeded Richard Strauss as director of the Berlin Opera. In 1925, he conducted the New York Philharmonic. In 1951, he conducted Beethoven's 9th at the first Beyreuth Festival since the war.
