Born into a musical family, he showed exceptional talent for the cello. In 1833 he left for Paris with his father and one of his brothers. In 1850, he became conductor at La Comédie Française. A musician at heart, he looked for venues.
Autograph letter signed "Jacques Offenbach" to a colleague, s.l.n.d. 1 p.1/2 in-8°, head printed of the "Théâtre de la Gaité". Beautiful piece. He opened a literary and musical competition at the "Théâtre de la Gaité" and asked his colleague to be part of the Jury which already included Thomas; Bizet, Reyer, Dumas.
