He began piano lessons with his mother in Berlin. He made his public debut at the age of 9 as a pianist and at 10 as a composer. By the age of 16 he had a considerable musical baggage. The pace of his work was hellish, and his physical health suffered as a result. The death of his sister triggered a crisis from which he never recovered.
