After entering the Paris Conservatoire in 1926 and winning the Prix de Rome in 1830, he shortened his stay in Italy. In 1833, he married Harriet Smithson, an Irish actress. In 1842, he left France with the singer Maria Recio. Unrecognised and shunned in France, he toured Central Europe as a conductor, then Russia and Germany. In 1868, he returned to France for good. His works do not fit into clearly defined genres.
