Orphaned at the age of 5, she was brought up in foster families in Geneva and Neuchâtel. Dreaming of independence, she left for Paris, where she married Stanislas Pieczynska, whom she followed to Poland in 1875. Childless, she gave literacy classes to young girls. In 1881, she came to Leuk for a cure and met a doctor from Boston. She divorced her husband, began studying medicine in Geneva and then left for the United States.
