An interpreter during the First World War, he became a writer, economist and from 1934 a contributor to Le Figaro. A professor at the Collège de France and a member of the Académie des Sciences, he was elected to the Académie française in 1944. He is the author of numerous studies on Anglo-Saxon countries, France and electoral sociology.
