LITERATURE - SAINT VICTOR Jacques Benjamin Maximilien (1770 - 1858) - Autograph letter signed
Lot 658 · The Langer Collection · 29 April 2024
Under Napoleon, he worked for the Journal des Débats and after 1815 founded several Catholic and royalist newspapers. In 1830 he revisited his homeland, then spent two years in the USA before returning to Paris where he wrote several books.
Autograph letter signed "J.B. de Saint Victor" (to the viscount, since duke, of Montmorency according to an annotation). (Paris), May 17, 1818, 2 pp. in-8°. Beautiful rare piece. He transmits two pieces to his correspondent; the first is a project of dedication to "Madame" of a work of piety that "Monsieur" the abbot of Tuffet chaplain of the grenadiers of La Roche-Jacquelin, knight of St Louis. offers to offer it to him. The second note relates to a royalist in poverty, Godin, recommended by the Viscount d'Agout. "... J'espère que son altesse royale voudra bien ne pas refuser cette faveur à un digne ecclésiastique, à un serviteur fidèle de la cause royale qui l'a d'abord défendu avec son épée pour la soutenir ensuite par sa prière....".
