After studying theology, he left the seminary and became a tutor in a public school from 1845 to 1849. In 1848, he was awarded the agrégation in philosophy. He was entrusted with missions in Italy. In 1863, he published the Vie de Jésus (Life of Jesus), which was a great success. In 1879, he was elected to the Académie française. Autograph letter signed on Mercredi soir to M. Lockroy. Renan asks his correspondent to come and see if everything is in order at Baldus’: ”…donner des ordres pour le réemballage, en un mot tout préparer pour le départ de vendredi ...".
