An engineer from the Ecole Polytechnique, he worked for a government ministry. In 1890, he resigned and began a career as a novelist. Director of the Revue de France from 1922 to 1940, he chaired the Société des gens de lettres and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Légion d'honneur. He was elected to the Académie française in 1909.
Autograph manuscript signed of a short story “Psyché”: S.l.n.d. 6 pp. in folio, erasures, corrections and crossed out passages, which begins: " Quand Ludovic Ambrus, pareil à une bête qui gagne sa remise familière, rentre, fuyant Paris, dans la maison de Hourquet...".
