He began publishing his works on foreign literature, particularly Shakespeare, before being appointed to the Sorbonne in 1863. By the end of the century, he was actively involved in politics in Lorraine. Throughout his life he was a writer, journalist, teacher, member of parliament and senator for Meurthe-et-Moselle.
Autograph letter signed Paris, 14.03. to a comrade and friend: "...je n'en ai reçu qu'un qui a reproduit le manifeste en entier…”.1 p. in-8.
