Minister of Finance, he was President of the Council in 1911-12, when he negotiated the Franco-German agreement on Morocco. He was forced to resign in March 1914 following the assassination by his wife of Gaston Calmette, director of Le Figaro, who had launched a violent campaign against him. Charged in 1917 with conspiring with the enemy, he was rehabilitated in 1925 and played a role again as Finance Minister.
