Studied at Rouen College. In 1841, he entered the Faculty of Law in Paris. In January 1844, he suffered a nervous breakdown, the first of many. His family moved to Croisset. He travelled and in 1855 settled in Paris. The trial of Madame Bovary took place in 1857. In 1863, his friendship with George Sand began and the following year he was invited by Emperor Napoleon III. While travelling, he wrote L'Education Sentimentale.
Autograph letter signed "Gve Flaubert" to a friend, Thursday, 19. s.l.n.d. 3/4 p. in-8°, brownish spots on the edges of the piece. Asking to express to Madame Beaujean her regrets at not being able to visit her: "... un abominable clou m'empêche d'aller après demain chez vous me réjouir de votre délivrance...".
