Obsessed with illicit love, it was the subject of the eleven plays he wrote before 1880. He was the complete opposite of his father; he fancied himself a realist, psychological and social writer. His greatest success was La Dame aux Camélias. He wrote many other novels and dramas.
Autograph letter signed to a benefactor: "...la direction des Beaux-arts doit être..."; Autograph letter signed to a Adolphe Adam: "...Présentez tous mes respects à Madame Adam et dites lui bien de ne pas faire acheter de poisson...".
