After studying medicine, he worked in the pharmaceutical industry, but at the same time gave free rein to his literary aspirations. He was a columnist for Candide and Figaro. Marked by the war, he worked for closer ties with Germany, but Hitler's actions made him change his mind. He denounced total pacifism and the Munich agreements. Awarded the Grand Cross of the Légion d'Honneur, he was promoted to the Académie française in 1935, elected perpetual secretary in 1944 and resigned in 1946.
