An eloquent lawyer, he defended opponents of Napoleon III. In 1870, after the defeat at Sedan, he was appointed Minister of the Interior in Paris, where the resistance was organised. But the Prussians laid siege to the city and he escaped in a hot-air balloon. In 1871, he came to Clarens for health reasons. Although opposed to the election of a National Assembly, he was elected and led the reactionary monarchist majority. Thanks to him, the Republic won and in 1877 his cabinet was overthrown. He symbolised republican patriotism.
