A collaborator of Masaryk, he became secretary of the Czechoslovak National Council, which was formed in Paris in 1916. Foreign Minister (1918-1935), he was elected President of the Republic in 1935 and resigned a few days after the signing of the Munich Agreement (29-30/09/1938). Head of the provisional government in London from 1940, he was again President of the Republic from 1945 to 1948. Unresponsive to the Communist coup d'état in February 1948, he resigned in June.
