Educated in Stowe, UK and at Le Rosay in Rolle. In 1949, he succeeded his grandfather, Louis II, and in 1956 married the American film actress Grace-Patricia Kelly. They had three children, Caroline, Albert and Stéphanie. He is responsible for reforming Monaco's constitution and expanding the principality's economy.
