Compulsory schooling in Lausanne, followed by Harvard College. In 1958, he took up a post as Secretary of UNESCO, which he combined the following year with the position of UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He holds Pakistani, British, French and Iranian nationality. He speaks six languages. In 1977, together with Denis de Rougemont, he set up the Bellerive Group, from which the WWF was born. He is deeply committed to environmental protection.
