After studying law at Cambridge, he returned to India in 1912.
In 1916, he met Gandhi and became one of his closest collaborators. He was imprisoned several times by the British and, after Gandhi's death in 1948, became the undisputed leader of Indian nationalism.His four political pillars were: democracy, socialism, unity and secularism.
