His parents were Swiss and he was a dual national. He studied mathematics and physics at Helsinki University. He attended the military academy in Paris and quickly rose through the ranks of the Finnish army to the rank of lieutenant-general. In 1940, he became commander of the II Corps. Mannerheim never recognized his military successes, and was not granted the rank of general. Following an "affair" he was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment for war crimes.
Autograph card signed Helsinki, 27.05.1952 to Paul Langer: "…j'en ai pu constater que vous avez bien connu notre grand citoyen le Maréchal Mannerheim…”. Included 2 photographs signed.
