Emperor of Ethiopia (1930), which he admitted to the League of Nations. He abolished slavery and began to modernize his country. Driven out by the Italians, he fled to England, then to Khartoum, from where he was able to retake the throne. During this period, he never accepted Italian 0ccupation. But in 1974 he was deposed by the army.
