Ingénieur des Mines de l'Ecole Poytechnique de Paris and Master of Art from Oxford, he was an editor at the Times and then, in 1921, worked at the League of Nations. In 1928, he became professor of Spanish literature at Oxford and Mexico City. He was Spanish ambassador to Washington and Paris, and later Minister of Education and Justice. In 1936, opposed to fascism, he left politics and went into exile in England during the Franco period. He wrote extensively in Spanish, French and English.
