He held positions of power during the Ancien Régime, the Revolution, the Directory, the Consulate, the First Empire, as President of the Council of Ministers under the Restoration and as ambassador under the July Monarchy. Very important letter written at the start of the Prussian campaign, 12 days after the victory of Jena (October 14) and the same day when the Emperor, arriving in Potsdam, visited the tomb of Frederick II and seized his sword. ".. J'ai l'honneur, Monsieur, de vous prévenir que Sa Majesté Impériale m'ayant autorisé à venir la rejoindre, je quitterai Mayence demain matin. Vous voudrez bien, en conséquence, m'adresser vos lettres au quartier général de l' Empereur. L'armée française a passé l'Elbe; Magdeburg est bloquée; l'Empereur marche sur Berlin. Telle était le 20 la position de l’armée”.
