Admitted to the seminary in Kabwe, he wanted to become a bishop. Expelled from the seminary, he returned to Mayombe where he worked as an accountant, then moved to Leopoldville where he became office manager. In 1957, he was elected mayor of Dendale. He was the first President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (1960 - 1965).
