Studied law at Sydney University. In 1930, he was the youngest Supreme Court judge. In 1941, he was Attorney General, then Minister for Foreign Affairs. In 1946, he was promoted to Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. He played a leading role at the San Francisco Conference in 1945, and later on the United Nations Preparatory Commission, the Security Council, the Atomic Energy Commission and finally the Conventional Weapons Commission. He is one of the leading authors of contemporary Australian history.
