A graduate of the University of Virginia, he began working for General Motor in 1924, becoming Vice-President in 1931. In 1934 he moved to United States Steel Corporation, where he became Chairman at the age of 38. In 1940, he was National Defence Adviser and in 1943 he was Under-Secretary of State. He accompanied Roosevelt to Yalta and took part in the creation of the United Nations, to which he was the first American ambassador.
