Description

Studied law at the Sorbonne, followed by a doctorate at the University of Washington. During the First World War, he worked in the war industry and later served at the Versailles Peace Conference. A supporter of international cooperation, he was disillusioned by the intransigence of the Soviet Union at international meetings. In 1949, he was elected to the Senate. President Truman asked him to conclude a peace treaty with Japan. Eisenhower’s Secretary of State, with whom he applied a policy of force towards the USSR and China, and died at home of cancer.
