Lot 46 · The Langer Collection · 29 April 2024
He held several regional political offices. In 1923, he was elected deputy and in 1935 senator. He then gave up his mandate as a deputy to take a seat in the Luxembourg Palace. After 1945, he was a member of the National Constituent Assembly, then of the first National Assembly, before being recalled by Robert Schumann to the Ministry of Reconstruction and Town Planning. The following year, he was elected to the Conseil de la République. On 23 December 1953, he became the second President of the Fourth Republic. This seven-year term was highly unstable, with six successive cabinets. Given the seriousness of the situation, he decided to call on General de Gaulle to form a government of public salvation in January 1959.
