Educated at the West Point Military Academy. After completing his training at Fort Benning Infantry School, he was given command of the 15th Army in China. He was transferred to Nicaragua, where he oversaw the free elections of 1927. Considered a specialist in foreign affairs and after serving in Bolivia and Paraguay, he was appointed military advisor to the Philippines. He took an active part in the Second World War, leading paratroopers in Sicily, on the Rhine, in Alsace and on the Baltic. He took part in the Korean War and replaced Eisenhower as Supreme Allied Commander Europe. He retired in 1955.
