Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1900, he became a senator and held several cabinet posts. He succeeded Paul Doumer in 1932 as the last President of the Third Republic. In 1940, the establishment of Vichy under Pétain deprived him of all authority. In 1944, he recognized de Gaulle.
