He entered politics as a radical-socialist deputy for Yonne and was Minister of Finance in 1895. He was Governor General of Indochina from 1897 to 1902. Back in France, he returned to the Chamber of Deputies in 1902 and was elected to the Senate in 1912. He was elected President of the Republic in 1932 and was assassinated by the Russian Paul Gorguloff a year later.
