HISTORY - BYRD Richard Evelyn (1888 - 1957) - Signed printed photograph

Trained at the United States Naval Academy. In 1914, he made his first aeroplane flight. In 1924, he organised a dirigible flight from Alaska to Spitsbergen. On 9 May 1926, he reached the North Pole. In 1928, he turned his attention to Antarctica and flew over the South Pole in November 1929. He became the US commanding officer for Antarctica.
