He left school at the age of 14 and worked as a commission agent, salesman, telephone operator and so on. At 27 he was secretary of the London section of the Labour Party. He was Minister for Transport, then Secretary of State for the Home Department. In 1945 he was Leader of the House of Commons and Deputy Prime Minister. In 1951, he was foreign secretary.
