Description

He was one of the few radical imperialists. As a young man he travelled in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. These journeys formed the basis of his book The Greater Britain. This book provided an imperialist ideology justifying the British as a benevolent race. He was considered a potential replacement for Gladstone as Prime Minister before he was cited as an adulterer in an infamous divorce case in 1885.
Autograph letter signed dated Newcastle-on-Tyne, 26.10.1897 to Paul Langer Senior: ” … The Australien colonies are far in advance of the rest of the world in all such matter…”; Autograph letter signed dated 76 Sloane Street, 15.02.1900 to Paul Langer Senior; “… we have many persons in this country who represent the liberty and property Defence Association who would be willing to attend…”.
