Studied chemistry at New College, Oxford. He also studied law and became a barrister in 1913. A pacifist, he served the French Red Cross during the First World War. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1931. A convert to Marxism, he published the Tribune, which advocated socialist solutions to the problems of the day. In 1939 he was expelled from the Labour Party along with Bevan. In 1945 he was readmitted to the party and joined the Attlee government. In 1947, he was Chancellor of the Exchequer, but his health forced him to resign in 1950.
