HISTORY - CHAMBERLAIN Joseph (1836 - 1914) - Handwritten envelope

A member of the Liberal Party, he was elected Mayor of Birmingham in 1873. Very popular, he was elected to the House of Commons in 1876. He was appointed Colonial Secretary in 1886 by the Marquess of Salisbury and was therefore responsible for policy in the Boer War. He was responsible for changing the imperial policy of the British Empire.
