In 1860 he became interested in the philosophy of Auguste Comte, the founder of modern sociology. He carried out detailed statistics on the poverty of the inhabitants of London (4 million) with the aim of circumcising it. In 1906, he switched from the Liberal Party to the Conservative Party.
Autograph letter signed dated 8 August 1902 to Paul Langer: "... I do not think I have contributed any thing else of interest on this subject…”.
