Sandhurst Military Academy. Officer during the First World War. Military expedition to North India. In 1933, on the death of his father, he left the army. From 1933 to 1939, he worked as a trader in South Africa, his last position being managing director of Dunlop. In 1939, he returned as a general to Ethiopia, then Sicily and Italy. In 1946, he was military governor of the British occupied zone. In 1953 he left the army to take on responsibilities in the transport sector.
